Initially, he mistook the knife for an ordinary object due to the faint visibility of the runes. It was only after conservators cleaned it that its extraordinary nature was revealed.
“This discovery feels like a message from the past,” Bonde remarked. “It’s a remarkable find that enhances our understanding of the origins of the earliest Scandinavian language. Personally, uncovering such a treasure is nothing short of fantastic.”

“It is extremely rare to find runes as ancient as these. This presents us with a unique opportunity to deepen our knowledge about Denmark’s earliest written language and the vernacular of the Iron Age,” stated Lisbeth Imer, a runologist from the Danish National Museum.
During this era, literacy was not widespread, implying that reading and writing were privileges associated with elite status and authority. The early history of runic writing reveals that those capable of writing formed a small intellectual group, with the first traces of such individuals emerging from Funen.
Historically, Denmark has seen only one similar discovery: in 1865, archaeologists found a bone comb featuring letters from the Nordic alphabet. The newly discovered knife will be transferred to the Odense Museum at Møntergaarden, where it will become part of the museum's permanent exhibit starting February 2.
