Exploring the Onewheel GT: A Unique Electric Ride Experience

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Onewheel GT

I've often noticed Onewheels on the streets and in YouTube reviews, and I’ve been eager to share my insights about them. The Onewheel GT, produced by Future Motion Inc, is their standout product, and it represents an exciting evolution in electric personal transportation.

In essence, the Onewheel GT builds on the strengths of the XR model that debuted in 2018, enhancing its overall design, power, and travel range. The concept is straightforward: a single wheel with a skateboard-like platform attached. Riders balance on pressure-sensitive footpads, allowing the board to self-level while moving. By leaning forward or backward, users can control their speed and direction, creating a fluid riding experience.

In a previous discussion, I explored a unicycle from InMotion, which, while also a single-wheeled vehicle, requires a different riding technique reminiscent of traditional unicycles.

This video delves into the differences between electric unicycles and the Onewheel, helping you decide which option suits your lifestyle better.

Chapter 2: The Onewheel GT's Performance and Features

The Onewheel GT provides a riding experience that resembles skateboarding or snowboarding, with the rider positioned sideways.

Future Motion Inc was founded in 2013 by Kyle Doerksen in Santa Cruz, California. The company turned to crowdfunding in 2014, exceeding its $100,000 goal on Kickstarter, marking a significant milestone in their journey. The company proudly states their mission: "We are in the business of making the future rad!"

The GT model was launched in 2021, bringing several enhancements. Its maximum speed increased from 19 mph to 20 mph, and the riding range expanded from 12-18 miles to an impressive 20-32 miles. With an optional fast charger, the Onewheel GT can fully recharge in just 90 minutes, or 200 minutes with the standard charger.

A notable feature of the GT is the enhanced powerband. This upgrade results in improved power, torque, and performance at various speeds, with horsepower increased from 2hp to 3hp, facilitating smooth acceleration and uphill travel. The Onewheel GT is designed to tackle minor obstacles with ease.

However, the larger battery means the GT is a bit heavier, weighing in at around 35 lbs without any added accessories. Fortunately, Future Motion has integrated the previously optional Maghandle Pro, a foldable aluminum handle that conveniently stows away when not needed. Additionally, the upgraded LED lights offer 300% more brightness than earlier models, providing better visibility during rides.

Furthermore, all GTs feature concave textured footpads, a highly requested upgrade from the XR model, ensuring better grip during off-road adventures.

One of the most talked-about enhancements is the introduction of rounded tires, which significantly improve maneuverability and carving capabilities. For those who prefer a more rugged ride, a treaded tire option is also available, ideal for navigating slippery surfaces.

Chapter 3: Safety Considerations and Community Insights

The Onewheel certainly offers a thrilling experience, capable of reaching speeds of 20 mph on flat terrain. However, safety is paramount. There are numerous videos showcasing riders experiencing falls, underscoring the importance of wearing a quality helmet, gloves, and appropriate protective gear.

Another concern is the phenomenon known as "ghosting," where the board continues to power on despite the rider dismounting, often leading to humorous or unfortunate situations. In such cases, the company will typically replace the footpads if the runaway board can be retrieved.

For those interested in joining the Onewheel community, the starting price for the Onewheel GT is around $2200, with countless options for upgrades and accessories available. While there is a learning curve, many riders advocate for this exciting mode of transportation, and you might find yourself among them soon!
