Transform Your Mornings: A Journey to Intentional Living

Written on

Chapter 1: The Awakening

A few months back, I found myself mindlessly scrolling through social media at 9:30 AM, realizing with a jolt how much time I had squandered. By 11 AM, I was still lost in a sea of Instagram reels, Twitter threads, and YouTube clips. Ironically, I was consuming motivational content across these platforms, which only made the situation more amusing. If you peeked at my Instagram, you’d see that I follow no celebrities or fashion influencers, making the moment even more cringe-worthy.

Despite having read over 100 self-help books, all advising against using your phone first thing in the morning, I found myself trapped in this cycle. I knew you might resonate with my experience. It's all too easy to lose ourselves in technology. We often dive into inspirational content on our devices, only to find that we need to break this habit—though not completely.

That moment of realization hit me hard: I needed to change. Such awakenings aren’t new for me; they occur frequently.

A peaceful morning scene reflecting an intentional routine.

However, this time felt different. Why? One of my readers emailed me that very day, sharing how my blog had positively impacted her life. It was a wake-up call for me—I realized that my writing resonated with others, and I had a responsibility to offer genuine value.

What does “extraordinary” mean?

For me, it’s about doing what most people avoid. In a world where everyone rushes to be the most productive, being extraordinary means slowing down and focusing on what truly matters. This is the foundation of my new morning routine.

My Extraordinary Morning Routine:

  1. Rise an Hour Earlier:

I’ve always aspired to be a morning person, often setting multiple alarms from 5 AM to 7 AM, only to wake up at 9 AM. After numerous attempts, I realized that abruptly shifting my wake-up time wasn’t realistic for me. Instead, I decided to gradually move my wake-up time from 9 AM to 8 AM. After a month, I’m now ready to wake up at 7 or 7:30 AM.

You might wonder why this matters. Waking up just one hour earlier signifies a step out of your comfort zone, setting a positive tone for the day.

  1. Cultivating Consciousness:

Upon waking, our minds are often blank. However, it's easy to be swept away by thoughts, losing that initial state of consciousness. To combat this, I close my eyes and express gratitude—whether through prayer or simply reflecting on something I'm thankful for. This practice centers my mind and prepares me for the day.

A moment of gratitude to start the day.
  2. Embracing Fitness:

I’m proud to say I’ve committed to regular gym sessions. For two years, my relationship with fitness was inconsistent. Now, I view it as a lifestyle rather than a fleeting goal. I began with 20-minute workouts at home, gradually increasing to 40 minutes, ensuring I also incorporate daily walks.

Why is this significant? Working on your health should not be a temporary venture but a lifelong commitment to feeling good in your own skin.

  1. Enjoying Breakfast:

While I may not be the best cook, I prioritize breakfast. Many people rush through this crucial meal, but taking time to enjoy it is essential for both physical health and mental clarity.

A wholesome breakfast to kickstart the day.
  2. Crafting a To-Do List:

To maximize my day, I create a to-do list after breakfast. This simple tool helps me prioritize my tasks, ensuring I enjoy my time while staying productive.

A productive to-do list for a fulfilling day.

Conclusion:

This is how I now start my mornings. I hope you find inspiration in these practices to lead a more intentional life. Remember, the first hour after you wake up can set the tone for the rest of your day. If you feel your days are monotonous, it might be time to reassess your morning habits.
