Why do scammers persist in their deceitful tactics? As Willie Sutton (allegedly) said, that's where the money is. Scammers are well aware of the financial opportunities available and may earn enough in a single day to support their families in developing countries. The chances of being caught and facing consequences are exceedingly slim for them.
These scammers operate like professional businesses, deploying various strategies, including text scams, to deceive millions of innocent individuals. Many people find themselves unable to answer their phones due to the overwhelming number of robocalls they receive. However, by familiarizing yourself with their dishonest tactics, you can shield yourself from becoming a victim.
Here are 18 strategies to help you avoid falling prey to scam robocalls:
Ignore Unknown Callers
If you don’t recognize the number, don't answer. While this may not always be feasible for everyone, especially in professional situations, it can significantly reduce your risk of being scammed.
Assume It's a Scam
Cold calling has become prohibitively expensive and ineffective, leading most legitimate businesses to abandon this method. Therefore, treat unknown calls with suspicion until proven otherwise.
Just Hang Up
If you suspect you're speaking with a scammer, don't hesitate to disconnect. They typically will not call you back.
Guard Your Personal Information
Be extremely cautious when sharing any personal details during unexpected calls. Even seemingly harmless information could lead to identity theft. Always verify the legitimacy of the caller before providing any sensitive data.

Legitimate businesses will usually be willing to let you call them back. If the caller insists you cannot do this, it's a strong indication they are not trustworthy.
Avoid Using Their Contact Information
If you suspect a scammer, don’t use the number they provide to return a call. Instead, look up the official contact information on their website.
Beware of Software Installation Requests
If a caller asks you to install software, it's a guaranteed sign of a scam. They may attempt to gain control over your computer and access your bank accounts.
Social Security Scams
Beware of calls claiming there's a warrant for your arrest related to your Social Security number. If you encounter this, ask to speak with your attorney. A genuine caller will not prevent you from doing so.
Vacation Offers
While not every vacation-related call is a scam, most unsolicited offers about vacations turn out to be fraudulent. Many originate from dubious sales operations.
Charity Solicitation Calls
Be cautious with recorded calls asking for donations. Many are actually political action committees masquerading as charities, often misusing names to deceive potential donors.
Involve Trusted Individuals
If you're pressured to make a decision, tell the caller you want to discuss it with someone you trust. Scammers often back off when they know you're involving others.
High-Pressure Tactics
If you feel rushed or pressured by the caller, trust your instincts and hang up. Legitimate callers do not employ such aggressive strategies.
Utilize Call Blocking Apps
Consider using apps like Nomorobo and Hiya to help mitigate robocalls, particularly on mobile devices.
Be Wary of Foreign Call Centers
Many scam calls originate from overseas, so be cautious of calls featuring poor English or odd phrasing.
Stay Defensive
Scammers maintain the upper hand by initiating contact. They often use aggressive tactics and misleading information to confuse victims.
Contact Your Legislators
Advocate for change by reaching out to your state and federal representatives. Express your frustration regarding the prevalence of robocalls and encourage them to take action.
