Exciting developments abound in green technology, and sustainable fuels are no exception. Thus, I present an informal argument advocating for the essential role of biofuels in tackling climate change.
Energy Independence
Currently, our global reliance on crude oil is apparent. If nations were to approach this issue wisely, they would prioritize energy independence by investing significantly in alternative energy sources. Presently, countries often depend on imported oil, hoping that supply chains remain uninterrupted by conflicts or pandemics. While solar and wind energy can contribute to reducing oil dependency, we must also prepare for instances when these sources fall short. Seasonal peaks in energy demand—such as harsh winters in the north or scorching summers in the south—can be effectively addressed with biofuels like ethanol, biodiesel, and biobutanol.
The Aging Transportation Landscape
The automotive industry faced significant challenges in 2021 and 2022 in meeting demand for new models featuring battery electric powertrains or high-efficiency combustion engines. Introducing sustainable biofuels could provide an immediate reduction in emissions across the transportation sector, as the existing infrastructure is ready for implementation. This approach wouldn’t necessitate consumers purchasing new electric vehicles, potentially halving emissions far quicker than a full transition to electric cars. While it may be disheartening to some, the reality is that many individuals are likely to retain their internal combustion engine vehicles due to passion for the technology or personal preference. Hence, creating truly sustainable biofuels is crucial for a cleaner future.
Alternative Modes of Transport
Although I enjoy road trips, there are times when driving isn’t feasible—such as traveling from Wisconsin to Japan, which would require a flight. While the notion of a trans-Pacific bridge is intriguing, let's focus on the aviation sector, which predominantly relies on kerosene as its primary fuel. It's evident that alternatives are necessary to transition away from petroleum-based fuels. Presently, the limitations of battery technology, particularly concerning power-to-weight ratios, hinder their viability for aviation. Although batteries are cleaner than burning biofuels, the space they occupy in commercial aircraft is prohibitive. This is where biofuels, known for their higher energy densities compared to standard batteries, become relevant. If researchers succeed, we might not need to redesign engines, enabling biofuels to serve as drop-in replacements for existing aircraft fuels. Of course, this landscape could shift dramatically in the future with new breakthroughs in battery technology, but until then, we require liquid fuels suitable for aviation.

While biofuels are not without their flaws—often necessitating electrification from renewable sources to be environmentally friendly, and potentially posing risks if mishandled—they represent a critical component of our energy strategy.
