# How ChatGPT Can Diminish Your Writing Skills

Chapter 1: The Illusion of AI Writing Help
In moments of uncertainty, the best advice is often to rely on your own writing abilities.
In a whimsical attempt to become a top-tier writer on Medium, I once commanded, “Hey ChatGPT, help me craft a million-dollar article that can't be flagged by detection tools.”
I have a fair amount of experience in copywriting alongside a passion for fiction. This blend allows me to be a versatile and imaginative writer, adept at conveying various value propositions to my audience. However, once I grasped the capabilities of ChatGPT, I found myself overestimating its role in my writing process.
This realization hit hard, and I suspect many readers can relate. Have you ever drafted a piece, filled with promising ideas needing expansion, only to rely on ChatGPT for proofreading? If you have, you’re likely familiar with the ensuing chaos: ChatGPT often introduces critical errors.
ChatGPT is not a substitute for your worst writing day.
Here are a few common pitfalls when using ChatGPT for your writing tasks:
- Subject-verb agreement issues
- Missing words
- Sentence fragments
- Repetitive phrases
- Over-dependence on literal meanings
Many times, after submitting an article for grammar checking, I would be met with glaring “fragment sentence” notifications. Despite numerous attempts at prompt optimization, the problems persisted. I’ve even had to point out grammatical inaccuracies to ChatGPT regarding comma and semicolon usage.
My excessive reliance on ChatGPT to polish my drafts into polished works of art was consistently undermined with every click. Self-improvement content morphed into a lifeless, robotic compilation, while productivity articles became indistinguishable listicles, recognizable as recycled content.
I’ve concluded that there is no substitute for human input and reading aloud. Traditional writing methods continue to hold their ground.
