Chapter 1: The Peculiar Nature of Coincidences
Coincidences can indeed be quite peculiar, wouldn't you agree?
Coincidence or Fate?
Alva Noto once remarked, "There is always room for coincidence." I encountered a rather peculiar coincidence today that made me reflect on this statement. It all started this morning when I stumbled upon an intriguing topic. Later in the afternoon, I took a drive with my son. We brewed some coffee and parked in our favorite quiet spot, overlooking a serene field with a couple of delightful brown cows.
While enjoying our drinks, I wanted to share the interesting concept I had read about, but the exact term eluded me. All I could recall was that it involved the word "sunk." The topic revolved around a common dilemma: imagine purchasing tickets for a movie, only to receive a call from a friend offering tickets to a much-anticipated game that coincidentally takes place at the same time as the film.
Most individuals would likely choose to stick with the movie, feeling compelled to attend because they had already paid for it. This leads to a situation where they opt for a less enjoyable experience rather than simply letting go of the sunk cost—the money already spent.
This scenario mirrors how we often cling to items in our homes that we no longer cherish, merely because we invested money in them. The funds are already gone, yet we hesitate to declutter our spaces in favor of a more minimalist aesthetic.
After our outing, we returned home, and I decided to indulge in some reading. My son then proposed we watch the next episode of Better Call Saul, which we had been revisiting. I agreed, planning to read afterward. As I switched on Netflix, the new episode began, and surprisingly, it was titled "Sunk Costs."
What a coincidence! I turned to my son in disbelief, realizing that this was precisely what I had been trying to recall. I thought perhaps this episode might clarify the concept better than I could. As we watched, I focused intently, searching for the moment that exemplified sunk costs. Near the end of the episode, Kim offers to help Saul out of a jam. When he questions her certainty, she simply responds, "It's The Fallacy of Sunk Costs."
This was the term I had been grappling with—not just "sunk costs," but the broader idea of the fallacy itself. One insight I had gleaned was that the act of decluttering often involves disregarding sunk costs.
Thus, my amusing coincidence unfolded: I had been trying to recall a term associated with the inability to cut losses, and the very next Netflix episode we watched happened to be centered around it. While it may not be the most extraordinary coincidence, it certainly was amusing in an unusual way.
What do you think? Was that a curious coincidence? Have you ever experienced something similar?
