Embracing Change: 3 Signs You Might Be Ready for Coaching

Written on

Chapter 1: Are You Ready for Coaching?

If you find yourself feeling exhausted, procrastinating, withdrawing, or contemplating a daunting yet exciting idea, it might be time to consider hiring a coach.

Recently, I learned about a term that some of my clients use when discussing their journey into coaching: "Marte-ready." One of my clients mentioned that a colleague had been contemplating working with me but was uncertain about whether he was "Marte-ready."

Intrigued, I asked for clarification. She chuckled and explained, "He noticed how much more present and clear I've become since we started coaching, and he wanted to know what it’s like to work with you and how I realized I was ready. He feels he needs assistance but isn't sure if he feels 'Marte-ready.'"

She reassured him, "Honestly, I didn't feel Marte-ready at first either. I was uncertain of what to expect, but I resonated with your insights and decided to take the plunge. Initially, it felt like boarding a train without knowing the destination, but I embraced the journey and have never looked back."

Even though he felt unsure, he eventually joined me for coaching and now values the support of a thought partner to help him navigate his challenges and broaden his perspective.

This leads us to ponder: How can you tell if you're ready to collaborate with a coach, even if you're uncertain?

During complimentary 30-minute discovery calls with potential clients, they share their motivations for seeking coaching. Based on their aspirations, I discuss how I can assist them and how we might structure our time together. These conversations also help us gauge our compatibility.

Over the years, I've identified three primary indicators that suggest you're ready to engage with a business coach:

  1. Feeling Burned Out and Stuck

A few months back, a client approached me after grappling with a significant vision for his life that he had developed in college. Now in his 30s, he felt disheartened by how far he was from realizing that vision. Despite his hard work, he was mentally, emotionally, and physically depleted, unable to see a path forward.

Together, we assessed his short-term habits and choices—like energy management, overwhelming commitments, and high personal standards—examining how they contributed to his burnout and hindered his progress toward his aspirations. We implemented small but impactful changes to help him regain his energy and focus. After a few months, he reported feeling revitalized and making progress toward his goals while improving his family relationships.

  1. Knowing What Needs to Be Done, Yet Hesitating

I'm someone who thrives in the unknown. As a performer and small business owner, I have navigated uncertainty many times, often intentionally. If you know the steps you need to take but haven't acted on them—especially when they lead into the unknown—a coach can provide invaluable support. A skilled coach understands the fears you're facing, has learned from their own experiences, and is committed to your vision. I often find that 88% of my clients are founders of small businesses or nonprofits, drawn to this dynamic.

  2. Exploring a Wild Idea That Feels Risky

Often, the most innovative ideas fail to flourish due to the concerns of those around you. Well-meaning friends and family may unintentionally stifle your creativity by projecting their fears onto your aspirations. If you're reluctant to share your bold ideas, doing so could lead to discouragement and abandonment of plans that could ultimately benefit others.

This situation is tragic in my view; the world needs bold ideas to foster innovation and drive progress. Creative concepts are essential for enriching our lives and improving society.

In conclusion, recognizing these signs can be the first step toward embracing change and seeking the support you need to achieve your goals.
