Embracing the Chaos of Writing Advice: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The Mixed Blessing of Writing Guidance
Let's be honest: many of us harbor a secret disdain for writing advice, even when it’s precisely what we need to hear.
As someone who dedicates my life to writing—being an author and a writing coach—it's a passion I feel compelled to share. I wouldn’t have invested significant resources into a Creative Writing degree or considered pursuing an MFA if I didn't truly love it.
With my extensive background, I believe I’m well-equipped to offer writing insights, yet I recognize the value of diverse perspectives, even from unexpected sources.
Initially, I absorbed every piece of writing advice like a sponge, eagerly seeking guidance and often pestering my professors during office hours to delve deeper into class topics. However, my attitude shifted over time; I began to dismiss advice that was meant to be constructive. What once felt like support started to feel like mandates.
“Always write first thing in the morning.”
“You should be writing every single day, even on holidays.”
“Keep your desk away from the window to avoid distractions.”
Rather than sounding helpful, these suggestions felt like strict rules dictating how to succeed as a writer.
I’m an avid collector of writing books—currently, I own over a hundred volumes from various authors, each offering different paths to becoming the ideal writer. The irony? None of them agree on what that ideal looks like.
Some insist on writing immediately upon waking, skipping coffee, bathroom breaks, or even feeding the dog. Others advocate for establishing a routine—grab coffee, dress as if heading to an office job, and then sit down to write.
Both approaches are valuable, but which should you choose? The one that resonates with you.
On some mornings, I jump out of bed and write without any breaks. Other days, I find myself needing to make coffee and tackle several tasks before I feel ready to create.
If a piece of advice doesn’t resonate, feel free to disregard it. Conversely, if it addresses a specific challenge, give it a try. It could be the insight that transforms your writing journey.
Above all, keep writing.
With warmth,
B.K. xo
