The Egyptian government has long sought the return of this significant piece, but the question remains: Who was Nefertiti?

Some sources suggest that Nefertiti may have played a pivotal role in reinstating traditional customs, possibly outliving her husband. Although Akhenaten's monotheistic vision did not endure, it left a lasting impact on the religious and cultural landscape of ancient Egypt.
Chapter 2: The Identity of Nefertiti
Nefertiti's full name, Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti, translates to “Beautiful is the Beauty of Aten, Beautiful has Come.” She is believed to have lived from around 1370 to 1330 BCE, though her exact lineage remains uncertain. Some speculate that she was the daughter of Ay, a high-ranking official and royal advisor, and Tiye, Akhenaten’s mother. Another theory links her to Tadukhipa, a princess from the Mitanni kingdom in northern Mesopotamia.
Nefertiti held the prestigious title of Great Royal Wife, and evidence suggests she was not only Akhenaten's primary spouse but also his most cherished. She bore him at least six daughters: Meritaten, Meketaten, Anchesenpaaton, Neferneferuaton-Tasherit, Neferneferure, and Setepenre. Her beauty is well-documented, and the famous bust captures her likeness with remarkable fidelity.
Did Nefertiti Rule Egypt?
Beyond being merely a queen, Nefertiti likely wielded significant power. There are indications that she may have ruled alongside Akhenaten and possibly acted as regent for the young Tutankhamun, Akhenaten's son with Kiya, one of his other wives, making her Tutankhamun's stepmother.
Her artistic depictions in regal poses typically reserved for pharaohs suggest her authority. She is portrayed riding a chariot and defeating enemies. Some believe she may have been Neferneferuaten, a female pharaoh who reigned from around 1334 to 1332 BCE, or even Smenkhkare, a mysterious ruler from the Amarna period. The erasure of Akhenaten’s legacy following his death has complicated the work of historians and archaeologists in understanding her true role.
Artistic Innovations in Akhenaten’s Era
The reign of Akhenaten and Nefertiti marked a shift not only in religion but also in art. This period, known as the "Amarna period," saw a relaxation of strict artistic conventions, allowing for more lifelike portrayals, even highlighting imperfections. Akhenaten's depictions often feature exaggerated facial features, while family scenes reveal fuller figures, a stark contrast to the previously rigid artistic norms.
