For starters, many meteorites are quite small and may completely disintegrate upon re-entry. Moreover, even if one observes a meteor falling, pinpointing the exact location of a tiny object scattered across an expansive area is no small feat.

Recent advancements have enabled scientists to tackle this dilemma using drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and machine learning algorithms. For instance, in April of last year, the Australian Desert Fireball Network's cameras detected a luminous meteor fireball. The captured footage allowed researchers to estimate a rough landing area and suggested that the meteor was relatively small.

A drone subsequently captured images of the terrain, which were then analyzed by an AI trained to recognize meteorites. This process generated a list of potential landing sites. A smaller drone was dispatched to these selected areas, enabling researchers to conduct a focused examination, which ultimately led them to just four promising locations.

After manual inspections, one site yielded a 70-gram meteorite. Initial analyses indicate it may belong to the chondrite classification, suggesting an orbit that extended beyond Mars, approaching Jupiter's path. The research team is now gearing up to analyze the meteorite's composition using various instruments, including a scanning electron microscope. This breakthrough could significantly enhance our understanding of these fascinating objects.
