However, excessive reliance on this type of motivation can lead to toxicity. Here are five forms of extrinsic motivation that can yield immediate short-term results:

You will need a rival—someone in the same field or engaged in similar activities. Interestingly, having a partner can amplify this motivation, as it often drives you to outperform each other, leading to measurable results.
  2. Survival Motivation: This motivation arises from extreme situations, where it’s a matter of all or nothing. Sun Tzu exemplified this in "The Art of War," using the metaphor of burning ships to illustrate the necessity of fighting for survival. When faced with two stark choices—one appealing and the other repulsive—the outcomes can often be more favorable than when a compromise exists. It’s worth noting, though, that decisions made in anger can significantly impair your judgment.
  3. Motivation Through Anger: This fleeting yet intense form of motivation can propel you into action, though its sustainability is questionable. Anger can serve as a catalyst for productivity, allowing you to channel frustrations into your work. A friend of mine once transformed a heated argument with his father into motivation for a project he was passionate about.
  4. Deprivation Motivation: This method involves imposing negative consequences for not completing tasks. For instance, you could give a friend a sum of money, only to retrieve it if you meet your deadline. I once had a colleague who used a similar approach with deadlines, leading to a healthy competition. The key to this method is to ensure the consequences resonate with your values.
  5. Fast Gratification Motivation: After identifying what you’ve been denying yourself, reward yourself upon achieving your goals—whether it’s a new gadget or a fun outing.

In conclusion, while it’s essential to accomplish tasks as they arise, cultivating intrinsic motivation in your actions will reduce reliance on these external methods.
