Ways to Naturally Alleviate Stress and Enhance Wellbeing

Understanding Stress in Modern Life

It's no secret that contemporary living can be overwhelming! As humans, we weren't built to endure prolonged periods of elevated cortisol levels. This stress hormone was originally meant to trigger our 'fight or flight' response—essentially, helping us evade danger, like an attack from a woolly mammoth! However, in today's world, our bodies are frequently exposed to high cortisol levels, leading to quick burnout.

Continue reading to explore ways to naturally decrease stress, allowing you to feel more joyful, serene, and balanced.

Skip the Caffeine

While I enjoy my morning brew, I've realized through experience that two cups is my limit. Any more than that, and my anxiety levels start to creep up. If you often feel stressed and are also a coffee lover, consider your own reactions to that beloved drink. You might find that, like me, excessive caffeine could be triggering your stress.

Meditation

You've likely heard about the benefits of meditation countless times, and that's because it genuinely helps! It provides both your mind and body with a peaceful break from daily pressures. Initially, I struggled with the concept, thinking I needed to clear my mind entirely. Now, I simply lie down in a comfortable position, listen to guided meditations or soothing sounds, and allow myself to unwind. If distracting thoughts arise, I acknowledge them and visualize them drifting away like clouds. Focus on calming your nervous system rather than achieving perfection.

Physical Touch

As human beings, we have an intrinsic need for physical connection. Studies show that infants deprived of touch may struggle to thrive. When we hug, our bodies release oxytocin, also known as the 'bonding hormone,' which encourages the production of other feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin while simultaneously lowering stress hormones such as cortisol. If you lack someone to hug, consider booking a massage or cuddling with a pet—animals can be incredibly therapeutic and effective at alleviating stress.

Chocolate

Good news for chocolate lovers! This delightful treat contains tryptophan, which helps your body produce serotonin, the happiness hormone. Eating chocolate can also elevate endorphin and dopamine levels with every bite. However, make sure to opt for dark chocolate, as it has the most significant mood-enhancing effects. For an extra boost, consider trying ceremonial cacao—but be cautious if you're on certain medications, as raw cacao can interact with antidepressants.

Infrared Sauna

During the chilly weather here in the UK, I've fantasized about having my own sauna. After some research, I stumbled upon an amazing infrared sauna blanket, which I quickly purchased. This type of sauna is excellent for soothing muscle tension, improving circulation, and promoting restful sleep, all while effectively lowering cortisol levels.

Yoga

Starting my day with just 15 minutes of yoga guarantees a brighter mood. Gentle yoga before bedtime enhances my sleep quality. The advantages of yoga for mood enhancement are well-documented, as it helps reduce cortisol and anxiety levels. There are numerous yoga tutorials available on YouTube to help you begin, or even just some gentle stretching can uplift your spirits and relieve tension.

Nature

Recent research indicates that spending merely 20–30 minutes in natural surroundings can significantly decrease cortisol levels. The more greenery, the better! Even a simple walk in a park can elevate your mood.

Tidy Up

A clutter-free space leads to a clutter-free mind. The law of attraction suggests that your environment mirrors your internal state. When you're feeling chaotic inside, your surroundings likely reflect that. Dedicate some time to organize your space, and you'll find a sense of calm.

Affirmations

Affirmations are a powerful strategy for managing stress, anxiety, and panic attacks. Through my study of the law of attraction, I've learned that we possess the ability to shape our own realities, including reducing stress and anxiety. By repeating affirmations, we can redirect our focus toward positive thoughts instead of succumbing to negativity. If you're unsure where to begin, try these affirmations during your next stressful moment:

  • "I am safe and in control."
  • "This too shall pass."
  • "I am protected."
  • "I am strong."
  • "Everything will be okay."

Aromatherapy

Did you know that lavender can reduce crying in infants and promote sleep in both adults and children? The therapeutic properties of essential oils are widely recognized. While some oils can energize you, others are soothing and calming. Consider using lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, lemon, or bergamot in a diffuser, as a massage oil, or as a pillow spray.

In summary, these ten simple yet effective strategies can help you naturally combat stress. And remember, what worries you today won’t matter in a century! Wishing you good luck and a smile!
