Navigating the Blogging Dilemma: Medium vs. Personal Blogs

Written on

The Blogging Conundrum

Should I transition away from my blogging venture and concentrate solely on Medium? This type of post serves as my alternative to a typical pros and cons list, which I've come to see as ineffective.

I manage a blogging business alongside my contributions on Medium. Although I enjoy writing, juggling both responsibilities is quite demanding. Coupled with a full-time job, I'm also in the process of acquiring new skills for my career shift, exploring new interests, and seeking additional income streams.

The Time Investment in Writing

Writing is undeniably time-intensive. Anyone who has written can attest to this fact. For instance, consider the effort required to produce two blog posts each week and promote one of them.

On average, I can complete a blog post in about an hour, while a Medium piece takes around half an hour. For longer posts, the time can stretch from thirty minutes to two hours. Writing two medium-length posts in a single day typically consumes around three hours, which is manageable in the short term, but may become burdensome over time. This commitment often cuts into my evenings and weekends, limiting my availability for other pursuits.

In addition to writing, I’m interested in exploring opportunities in real estate and investing, and I aspire to be a financial analyst. My curiosity has also shifted towards AI, an area I’m keen to learn more about.

Social Life and Personal Interests

Balancing writing with social obligations can be tricky. Though my social circle is modest, maintaining relationships takes time. Beyond that, I have a variety of interests including sports, gym workouts, walking, hiking, reading, and health.

The Joy of Writing on Medium

I must admit, writing on Medium is a uniquely enjoyable experience. The platform allows me to express myself freely while maintaining anonymity. However, this anonymity comes with drawbacks, such as difficulty in establishing a personal brand.

For those looking to expand a business, a more conventional approach may be necessary. Striking a balance is crucial; I wouldn't want to alienate my audience or face potential backlash that could affect my job security. Writing for a blog can sometimes feel repetitive. While I cover life experiences, the approach can feel sterilized, lacking the depth of topics I feel knowledgeable about.

A Reluctance Toward Business Ownership

Interestingly, I’ve never had a strong desire to run a conventional business. If that were the case, I wouldn’t have shut down my eCommerce store. Though eCommerce has its challenges, particularly in managing suppliers, the actual selling process often feels straightforward.

I'm not inclined to label myself as a businessman; I prefer purpose over profit. Selling holiday cards online wouldn't fulfill that desire. I long for meaningful challenges that can contribute positively to the world, regardless of whether I'm employed or self-employed.

Finding My Path

I've experimented with various business models and found them unappealing. Creating content seems to align more with my passions, yet I still seek purpose in my work. I don’t want to create superficial content merely for views; I aim for something more substantial.

My original interest in blogging stemmed from its solitary nature. It provides the flexibility to write without the pressure of selling products. Real estate intrigues me because it offers potential enjoyment without the day-to-day grind of a traditional business.

The Financial Security of Medium

Despite contemplating deleting my Medium account, the financial stability it offers keeps me engaged. In contrast, my blogging efforts require significant time before yielding any financial return.

Initially, I intended to phase out Medium once my blog became more profitable, but given the current economic climate and my mounting expenses, I need every bit of income I can generate. I believe that dedicating more time to Medium would enhance my content quality and provide additional revenue through affiliate programs.

While blogging offers a degree of freedom, my primary focus remains on writing. The monthly cost of maintaining my website often offsets my earnings from Medium.

Exploring Alternative Writing Forms

I have tried various forms of writing but found them unsatisfactory. Journalism, for example, often involves covering repetitive stories and interviewing unengaging individuals. I also have no desire to write a book, as my previous attempt felt burdensome.

Copywriting lacks creativity, while technical writing is equally uninspiring. Blogging, however, allows for the most freedom and creativity. There are fewer constraints, and I can write at my own pace without collaboration.

The Future of My Blogging Venture

It appears that I'm moving towards closing my blogging business for good, yet I'm considering launching a new store. Despite my aversion to eCommerce, I have an idea inspired by my love for hiking and photography. I plan to create an Instagram print store to generate some additional income.

For now, my goal is to pursue purpose. I will continue learning and experimenting with new ideas and see where this journey leads.
