Chapter 1: The Impact of Covid-19 on Relationships

The Covid-19 pandemic served as a significant turning point for many relationships. For some, it revealed deep-seated issues that were previously masked by distractions. In my case, the fissures in my marriage became increasingly evident and could no longer be patched up with physical intimacy, which had been my usual remedy.

Initially, the closure of schools and universities created immense tension. My partner struggled to accept the shift to online learning, dismissing it as insufficient. He was frustrated by our presence at home, feeling we obstructed his ability to work effectively.

My eldest child had already moved into her own apartment for university and opted to stay there, seeking solitude instead of returning home to an increasingly tense environment.

Adding to the stress, he lost his job just before the lockdown, and the passing of his mother compounded our challenges, making everything significantly harder.

My sleep routine became increasingly strained. I would retreat to bed early to read or watch shows, while he remained downstairs, often lashing out at our older son, who was home from university. The gaming sessions of our son, filled with laughter and noise, only irritated him further. The kitchen became a battleground where his drinking led to shouting matches between him and our son.

I often found myself anxious in bed, anticipating his outbursts fueled by alcohol. When he would storm upstairs to demand I intervene, I would calmly suggest he talk to our son directly, insisting it was crucial to communicate respectfully.

Despite my personal indifference to my son's gaming habits—after all, he was engaging with friends—my partner had begun sleeping on the couch due to the noise. The expectation that I should handle the situation felt misplaced.

He rarely interacted with his children, and the strain in his relationship with our eldest was particularly pronounced. The atmosphere in our home became unbearable.

During lockdown, I was furloughed from my job, which led us into a monotonous routine. He would isolate himself in our bedroom by 8 PM, claiming the space as his own to discourage me from using it. I ended up sleeping on the couch every night, only venturing into the bedroom when he was absent.

The space felt alien; I no longer recognized it as my room or my home. He took care of his own meals, shopping, and laundry, creating a palpable divide between us—essentially, we had separated without officially doing so.

With the beautiful weather, I began spending my mornings in the garden, setting up my laptop and books outside to escape his presence. His drinking worsened during this time, leading him to periodically criticize or provoke me for reactions.

One day, he dramatically questioned when I would return to work, expressing his frustration with our situation. I reminded him that I was furloughed with full pay, while he was unemployed. It became clear that financial concerns took precedence over my well-being.
