Navigating the Noise: Why Ignoring Comments Is Crucial

Written on

Chapter 1: The Dangers of Online Discourse

In today’s digital age, comments sections can often become a breeding ground for negativity. I once dreamt about driving down a road that vanished into a puddle, eventually leading to an expansive sea. Just as the water lapped at the edges of my car, I found myself lost in thought about the harsh realities we face online.

A strange shortage had me searching for Pop Tarts, which led me to a store where a customer made a derogatory remark about the cashier's ethnicity. The cashier's calm demeanor spoke volumes; he had likely endured similar insults countless times. I left feeling regretful for not standing up for him.

As Hurricane Debby bears down on us, NOAA warns of heavy rain. Just the other night, our fitness center was inundated with water, and as I attempted yoga amidst the chaos, I couldn't shake the anxiety of being judged by the maintenance crew, whom I once worked alongside.

There's a tab open on my browser labeled "drought-resistant perennials," as my partner Susan aims to revive our garden. This summer has been the hottest and driest I've ever experienced, and each evening, I return to my car parked on a blistering asphalt lot. The thermometer often reads over a hundred degrees, contrasting sharply with the cooler temperature reported by my office computer. I drive home lamenting another day without cycling.

I managed to read four books this summer, and it feels like I'm finally breaking free from a reading slump. However, I realized that reader's block can be just as challenging as writer's block—each new book feels like an obstacle. From January to April, I struggled through Sonic Life, a memoir by Thurston Moore, founder of Sonic Youth. The book's repetitiveness left me uninspired. While I once enjoyed his ex-wife's memoir, this one felt even less engaging. Despite my admiration for him, I might just sell it on eBay to reclaim space on my shelf.

The prevalence of racism, misogyny, and homophobia continues to sicken me. Despite reading uplifting articles about talented figures like Taylor Swift and Simone Biles, I often sabotage my own mood by diving into the comments. It’s disheartening to witness so much disdain from individuals who should uplift these women rather than belittle them. Why do they feel entitled to criticize those who bring joy to millions?

In the political arena, DEI has become a term shrouded in negativity. The only candidates addressing this issue are Tim Walz and J.D. Vance, two white men selected for their identities rather than their merits. One aims to appeal to gun enthusiasts, while the other represents a misguided effort to attract younger voters. Both seem to cater to fears surrounding the election of a Black woman as president.

I also had a dream of cycling to work, only to arrive without a lock to secure my bike.
