Nurturing a Childlike Faith: Embrace Simplicity, Boldness, and Joy

Chapter 1: Understanding Childlike Faith
Do you possess a faith in God that resembles that of a child? There are moments when I do, and others when I struggle. However, fostering a childlike faith is a valuable aspect of one’s spiritual journey. The passage in Mark 10:13–16 serves as an important reminder from Jesus, encouraging us to approach Him with a simple faith in a mighty God.
13 Then they brought young children to Him so He could touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 14 When Jesus saw this, He became indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16 And He took them in His arms and blessed them, laying His hands on them. (Mark 10:13–16, NKJV)
The innocence of children is something I cherish. "Children demonstrate sincerity, eagerness, a trusting nature, and complete dependence on their parents. Thus, being childlike is a fitting analogy for the qualities a disciple should embody." [TNSB] This beautifully illustrates how the characteristics of children can reflect the faith we should have in God as Christians.
However, nurturing a childlike faith is not always straightforward. It requires effort, but the rewards are immense. Here are some ways to cultivate a childlike faith in your spiritual journey.
Section 1.1: Embracing Simplicity
Life can be intricate and challenging, yet it’s often beneficial to return to the fundamentals. This year, I have chosen simplicity as my guiding principle. I’m striving to simplify my life and reconnect with the essentials. Developing a childlike faith means getting back to the core truths about God. Remember, Jesus sacrificed Himself for your sins, and He wishes to guide you through life. Approach Him like a child, maintaining sincerity, eagerness, and trust.
Section 1.2: Cultivating Boldness
Children are known for their candidness; they express whatever comes to mind without hesitation. They are in a constant state of learning and exploration. Embrace this childlike boldness in your relationship with God.
11 Therefore, let us be zealous to enter that rest, lest anyone fall by the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 14 Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:11–16, NKJV)
This passage from Hebrews 4:11–16 resonates deeply with me. The Word of God is alive and potent. Jesus serves as our High Priest, having experienced temptation yet remaining sinless. He understands our struggles. We can approach God’s throne of grace boldly, finding mercy and assistance in our moments of need.
Section 1.3: Finding Joyfulness
Children radiate joy. I cherish the laughter of my nieces and nephews; it’s infectious. We can all take a cue from the joyfulness exhibited by children. Strive to cultivate more joy in your life. While it’s unrealistic to expect constant happiness, you can maintain a sense of joy through life’s highs and lows by grounding it in the Lord rather than your circumstances.
Chapter 2: The Essence of Childlike Faith

This quote by Khalil Gibran paints a striking picture of faith as an oasis. An oasis represents a fertile area nourished by fresh water in an otherwise barren land. The caravan of thought can often obstruct our journey to this oasis of faith. Overthinking can hinder faith. To cultivate a childlike faith, focus on simplicity, boldness, and joyfulness.
