Chapter 1: The Awakening
There’s no better moment than now to reshape your identity. After stepping away from drinking, I realized I was no longer the same person I once was.

My alcohol consumption escalated after I retired. If I chose, happy hour could begin as early as 4 p.m., and often it did. With an abundance of free time and no concrete plans ahead, I sought ways to fill my days. I volunteered weekly at a local art museum and enjoyed hikes in the mountains with my dog. Occasionally, I'd attend a gym class, but if I woke up feeling the effects of a hangover, I would cancel my plans and focus on recovering.
While I had aspirations for my retirement, they felt vague and unformed. I longed to return to painting, a passion I had before alcohol became a daily habit. However, I found myself lacking both energy and motivation.
Section 1.1: Embracing Sobriety
After immersing myself in "quit lit," blogs, and newsletters focused on sobriety, I finally embraced this new lifestyle.
The initial weeks were challenging, but as I adapted to my new routine, it became significantly easier. After a couple of months of sobriety, I found my balance. I felt revitalized and eager to explore the limitless opportunities that lay ahead as a sober individual in the third phase of my life.
Subsection 1.1.1: A New Vision
I began to ponder who I would become. Encouraged by others, I decided to start a blog to share my life experiences, something I found impossible while drinking. Now, I was ready to take that leap. On December 30, 2018, just three months post-sobriety, I launched my blog, Strong55plus.blogspot.com.
Section 1.2: Discovering New Passions
My next adventure involved creating collages for my two sons, a task that proved challenging but ultimately rewarding. I also took up pickleball, playing three to five times weekly. This not only provided great physical exercise but also fostered new neural connections in my brain. Plus, I met a whole new circle of friends.
In January 2021, I ventured into writing for Medium—a thrilling yet daunting experience. I realized I was indeed a writer, a pickleball enthusiast, and an artist rediscovering my creativity.
Chapter 2: Your Potential Awaits
The key takeaway is this: If I can develop new skills at my age, what’s stopping you from doing the same? If you desire a life you can take pride in, now is the time to quit drinking.
If you want to face challenges with enthusiasm and vigor, clear out your liquor cabinet today. For a sharper mind, relinquish alcohol now.
Do you yearn for a strong, healthy body that moves gracefully? Then let go of the drink. If your sleep is troubled and you often wake up feeling anxious or regretful, it’s time to sober up.
You have the power to reinvent yourself into someone you will be proud of. Life holds endless possibilities, but alcohol can hinder you from realizing your fullest potential.
Visualize the person you aspire to be—don’t delay. Even before you quit drinking, start imagining how you want to look and what you will do in your newfound sober life. Dreaming is your first step towards a more fulfilling, successful, and joyful existence. Embrace the journey ahead as the new sober you awaits.
