Strategies for Gaining Medium Followers: My Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The Motivation Behind Gaining Followers
Many writers don’t wake up each day focused solely on maximizing their earnings through their writing. Nevertheless, a little extra income from our craft is often appreciated. To monetize our work on Medium, two conditions must be met:
- Attaining at least 100 followers.
- Publishing at least one story.
Reaching that initial milestone of 100 followers can be quite challenging, prompting writers to adopt various strategies. Some join following trains to speed up the process, while others prefer to cultivate a loyal audience through consistent writing. I opted for the former approach and wrote an article requesting followers. Here’s what I discovered from that experience.
You Will Gain Followers Quickly
I reached my goal of 100 followers just a few hours after publishing my request for support. By the end of the week, I had amassed around 600 followers, which was an exhilarating achievement.
You May Encounter Criticism from Other Writers
By “other writers,” I refer to Medium users who chose to pursue a more traditional route to gain followers by consistently producing high-quality content. I respect those who can invest the time and effort required for this method, but I believe there are multiple ways to build an audience. Different goals exist for each writer on Medium, and that diversity is acceptable. However, I’ve noticed that those who follow the traditional approach often disapprove of the rapid following method. They may write articles critiquing it or leave negative comments on my requests for followers. While I understand their viewpoint, I sometimes wish for less critique on the subject.
A Valuable Strategy for Building Your Audience
Numerous articles advise against using follow-for-follow tactics to grow your fan base on Medium, and I must confess I strongly disagree. Many claim that followers will drop you as soon as they reach their own goal of 100, or that you may gain numerous followers who won’t engage with your content. My experience has been quite the opposite. I have yet to notice anyone unfollowing me, and I’ve forged many valuable connections. The writers who followed me after reading my article actively engage with my work, leave claps, and feel like genuine friends. This mutual engagement is significant. As mentioned in my article, I too have been actively interacting with others, discovering many writers whose content I enjoy. Writing an article asking for followers has truly enriched my experience in various ways.
If you haven’t yet reached the 100 followers milestone, I highly recommend crafting a similar article to request followers. While you might receive some negative feedback from more experienced writers, there’s no shame in seeking connections. Just be sure to clarify what you’re offering and what you hope to receive in return—specifically, that you will actively engage with the content of those you follow, and hope they do the same for you. I trust this article will be helpful, and as always, happy writing!
