Chapter 1: The Beginning of Your Writing Journey

Do you recall the start of your writing adventure? For some, it was years ago, while others may have embarked on this path just recently. Whether you began on platforms like WordPress, scribbled in spiral-bound notebooks as a child, or started journaling, many writers found their way to Medium.

As we dive deeper into our Medium experience, it's easy to become emotionally attached to our stats. Initially, seeing earnings grow from mere pennies to actual dollars can be exhilarating. However, this can also lead to an unhealthy obsession.

My introduction to Medium in January 2022 wasn't motivated by a desire for wealth or fame. A friend suggested it as a solid blogging platform, and I simply needed a space to display my writing and secure freelance gigs. I still remember my first blog post about Dexter, inspired by a casual chat over wine.

Soon after, I landed my first writing job, which offered more than the meager pennies I was earning on Medium. My first month there, I made less than a dollar overall—just ten cents per article! If this were the 19th century, I might have thrived, but in 2022, it felt disheartening.

At that point, I was merely dipping my toes in. Although I admired some writer role models, I didn’t actively contribute much to the community. My self-worth was tied to my earnings rather than the quality of my early writing.

In my second month, I focused heavily on my freelance work, publishing only one article on Medium. Surprisingly, my earnings from that month tripled despite my limited output. A 300% increase is certainly noteworthy—$167.30 from content writing compared to a mere $3.04 on Medium.

However, in March, I experienced a shift in perspective that changed everything. I started to realize that content writing wasn’t fulfilling. The topics often bored me. Despite completing a staggering 131 articles for clients, I found myself longing for the creative freedom that Medium offered.

My writing voice began to emerge, and I discovered that blogging was far more enjoyable. I could pick topics that excited me instead of being shackled to uninspiring assignments. Then came the turning point: my first major article on Medium went live in late March, leading to my earnings averaging over a dollar a day—an impressive increase compared to February.

The rush of seeing views and earnings surge was intoxicating. By the end of that month, my follower count had skyrocketed to 446, and many readers showed their support. This validation became addictive.

April was even better, with earnings surpassing $420, prompting me to dedicate half my writing time to Medium. Yet, I found myself often fixated on fluctuating stats, which affected my self-esteem.

Despite the joy of writing, the ups and downs of earnings could be disheartening. I refused to let these challenges deter me from my goal of becoming a prominent blog writer—not just on Medium, but globally. Determined, I ramped up my efforts, tried new strategies, and connected with fellow writers. By the end of my first year as a professional writer, my follower count had surged to 6,575.

The progress I made was remarkable. I firmly believe that hard work and self-confidence pave the way to success. Despite occasional negativity, I’ve developed resilience against criticism. Detractors only ignite my passion for writing. I cherish the impact my words have on others, whether it’s making them think or laugh.

In early 2023, we created a Discord server for Medium writers, fostering a community of over 450 members. It was meant to be a space for connection and support, but I noticed a growing trend of complaints about declining stats and changes on Medium, which dampened the environment.

My hope for all Medium writers is to focus on the joy of writing rather than the financial metrics. Adjusting your style solely for earnings will not serve your long-term journey. Embrace the pride of writing authentically, and the rewards will follow.

I transitioned from focusing on stats to believing in my abilities, and it transformed my experience. As I approach 60,000 followers, I'm excited about future achievements.

Writing is what truly matters. So, prioritize your craft and resist the urge to dwell on stats. If I can achieve this in just two and a half years, I have no doubt you can too.
