# Essential Steps to Successfully Leave Your 9-to-5 Job

Chapter 1: My Journey to Quitting the 9-to-5

In 2016, I made the bold decision to leave my 9-to-5 job. After seven years of feeling frustrated and unfulfilled, I finally decided to take the plunge, and it transformed my life for the better. However, this was not an impulsive choice; I meticulously prepared myself by following eight crucial steps before handing in my two weeks' notice. If I had the chance to redo it, I would do it exactly the same way. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the eight steps to consider before leaving your day job.

The 8-Step Guide to Quitting Your Job

This is the approach I took when I left my 9-to-5 job six years ago, and I would still recommend it today.

Preparing for a successful career transition

Step 1: Begin Before You Bid Farewell

What is your motivation for quitting? Are you planning to start a business, dive into freelancing, or take time off for travel? Regardless of your future plans, it’s wise to begin your new path before you resign. For instance, I ventured into entrepreneurship about 18 months prior to leaving my job, gradually building my business until it surpassed my previous income. This eased my financial transition significantly.

  • Gain experience while still employed
  • Start generating income alongside your job
  • Assess your long-term interest in your new venture

Step 2: Conduct Thorough Research

When you resign, many benefits will disappear, some of which you may not have considered. This includes:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Access to company amenities, like fitness memberships
  • Employee discounts
  • Company-provided tools and resources
  • Tuition reimbursement

Take time to evaluate your current benefits so you can plan for their loss. In my case, I only had a short gap before my new health insurance began, as my previous employer offered COBRA during my transition.

Step 3: Adopt a Long-Term Perspective

Visualize your future: where do you see yourself next year, in three years, or even five? Ensure your decision to leave your job will lead to long-term happiness. It’s essential to consider the potential for burnout or regret after pursuing your dreams.

Step 4: Formulate a Detailed Plan

Creating a plan kept me focused and motivated. I regularly revisited my action plan, adjusting it as I moved closer to my entrepreneurial aspirations. Key considerations should include:

  • Desired savings
  • Essential benefits for yourself or family
  • Living arrangements
  • Expected personal and business expenses

Step 5: Establish a Backup Plan

What if your new venture doesn't pan out as expected? Having a contingency plan is crucial. Will you seek another job, work for a friend, or stay with family until you regroup? Outline this plan clearly.

Step 6: Save Enough Money

Aim to save at least six months' worth of expenses. Having this financial cushion is vital, as it provides peace of mind and security during your transition.

Step 7: Take Action

Finally, execute your plan. I transformed my passion project into a full-time career while still working my job. I remember my first $25 sale from my e-commerce store vividly. While balancing both roles, I saved diligently, mapped out my benefits replacement, reduced my expenses, and created a comprehensive business plan. Once my business income exceeded my salary, I confidently resigned.

Step 8: Submit Your Resignation

When it’s time to leave, submit your notice professionally. Although it might be tempting to walk away immediately, maintaining a good relationship with your employer is essential. You never know when you might cross paths with former colleagues or need to return.

Now that you have this blueprint for leaving your 9-to-5 job, what are your thoughts? Would you adjust any steps?
