Following Your Own Path: Embracing Personal Leadership

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery
As we navigate through life, we learn and adopt behavior patterns largely through observation, whether in group settings or individual interactions.

We often become adept at imitating the actions and attitudes of those we look up to—teachers, leaders, and mentors. When we witness results from our unconscious mimicry, it can be surprising, especially when some outcomes feel unwelcome.
Celebrating positive results can bring excitement, but negative outcomes often lead to questions about our choices: “What did I do to deserve this?” The root of these feelings may lie in a disconnect between our unconscious actions and conscious intentions. Even when we go through the motions mindlessly, outcomes will still manifest.
The concept of following a leader has been ingrained in our culture for centuries. I recall my early days in sports; every move was demonstrated repeatedly to help me visualize before I could attempt it myself. The cycle of trying, failing, adjusting, and trying again was how I learned every aspect of the game, from throwing and catching to dribbling and shooting. The bond between teacher and student is undeniably powerful.
However, this dynamic can become problematic when a leader is unaware of the influence they exert through their actions. Many people are inclined to imitate behaviors rather than words.
In my own life, I found myself embodying unreliability because I was surrounded by those who exhibited this trait. Their failure to show up or follow through became my norm until I faced conflicts that made me ponder, “How can I change this?” and “How can I improve myself?”
These inquiries sparked an explorer's mindset within me, encouraging the pursuit of new questions and perspectives, which ultimately led to personal discoveries. It felt akin to climbing a mountain and gaining a broader view of life.
Over time, I recognized that the essence of leadership is intertwined with a universal energy that guides all living beings. Initially, we may lack the awareness of this profound influence, choosing to trust those who exhibit larger-than-life personalities. We follow their lead until we reach a pivotal moment in life where we must decide: “Will I continue to follow them blindly?”
As we grow more conscious, we may realize that the leaders we look up to often fail to follow their own guidance. This realization prompts the question: “Why should I follow your advice if you don’t adhere to it yourself?”
In that moment of awakening, we gain a fresh perspective on life and the array of possibilities that lie ahead. We begin to trust in an unseen force guiding us, understanding that it is not always embodied in human form, which can sometimes lead us astray.
This guiding energy communicates with anyone willing to listen, fostering a personal relationship that encourages us to lead ourselves with awareness. We can confidently walk our chosen path, and if we need to shift directions, we must be prepared to embrace change, remembering that new paths are not shortcuts.
I have learned that moving slowly, attuned to that guiding spirit, is the true essence of our journey. If we rush ahead, we invite frustration.
Slow and steady seems to be how life unfolds, and while leading ourselves in this way may lack glamour, it proves to be the most effective approach. Embrace the pace, for it ensures we don’t miss our opportunities—sometimes, there’s no turning back.
