Navigating the Overwhelm of Inspiration: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: Discovering Medium and Its Influence
I first stumbled upon Medium in mid-June 2022, which I distinctly noted in my journal that I began writing around that time. My motivation for journaling stemmed from various articles highlighting its numerous advantages. Recently, I also purchased some crisp white shirts after reading about essential items for creating a capsule wardrobe. Interestingly, I drafted this article in Notion—a tool I learned about through Medium as well.
As you can probably tell, it’s all too easy to become entangled in a web of 'shoulds'—the constant pressure of what we ought to be doing. There’s an abundance of remarkable articles, both on Medium and beyond, that promote journaling, minimalism, waking up at 5 AM, and the newest productivity apps. However, for individuals like me who are easily swayed by these suggestions, it can lead to a sense of overwhelm, leaving us uncertain about our true desires and needs.
Take journaling, for instance. As a child, I kept diaries that gradually evolved from simple weekly entries to more detailed daily accounts during my teenage years. Initially, I wrote about school and music, but this habit fizzled out by my twenties. Recently, I attempted to revive journaling, using either a dated diary or a blank notebook. Despite my efforts, I struggled to maintain consistency, often skipping several days at a time. Now, after just over a month, my enthusiasm is waning.
Despite numerous articles praising the benefits of journaling, I haven’t experienced significant changes in my life. I suspect this is because I haven’t been completely open with myself in my journal. The ideal practice encourages us to pour out our thoughts and feelings as if no one is watching. However, with two other people in my household, I often hesitate, fearing that they might read my private thoughts. Consequently, I haven't engaged in any profound self-reflection within those pages.
I’ve attempted journaling at various times throughout the day and even explored interstitial journaling (which I learned about online), yet the results have been minimal. Mornings often leave me feeling blank, and evenings sometimes slip away before I find time to reflect. Even when I manage to write before sleeping, I can’t say it improves my rest.
Another dilemma arises when considering what to do with a filled journal. My past diaries were tucked away for years, but during the pandemic's onset in 2020, I panicked at the thought of my partner discovering them. I spent days tearing them apart, discarding the remnants—a significant loss that makes me question the point of writing them in the first place.
After a month, I find myself ambivalent about journaling. While it clearly benefits many, it may not be the right fit for me.

Chapter 2: The Capsule Wardrobe Dilemma
As much as I admire minimalism, I enjoy decluttering and find the concept of a capsule wardrobe appealing. After reading various articles about essential items, I began with two versatile white shirts that can be dressed up or down. Given that I primarily work from home and only need one office outfit, I’m puzzled why I bought shirts that require ironing.
To be fair, I’m not entirely naive; I tend to be influenced by what I read. At the time of purchase, I genuinely believed I wanted to curate a capsule wardrobe. Now, I see the error in that thinking—thankfully, I never got around to the leather jacket, which is another suggested staple!

Chapter 3: Finding My Own Path
In contrast to journaling and wardrobe changes, my experience with Notion has been fruitful! While I already use Todoist for task management, I’ve discovered other ways to utilize Notion effectively. Previously reliant on Google Docs for writing, I now find myself drafting most of my content within Notion, in addition to maintaining various lists and databases. Though I haven't yet harnessed its full potential, I enjoy exploring its features.
The Takeaway
Ultimately, the lesson here is to embrace the wealth of productivity tips and life hacks available without losing sight of your authentic self and what genuinely works for you. Experimentation is valuable, but it’s crucial to recognize when something doesn’t resonate or align with your lifestyle. Don’t feel obligated to do everything.
I won’t stop reading Medium articles or drawing inspiration from others, but I will take a step back to reflect on what truly matters to me. This includes assessing the areas of my life I wish to focus on, what is effective, and what is not. It’s time to return to basics and start anew, likely in Notion rather than in my journal, as I know that’s where I thrive!
