# Poetry, Time, and the Quest for Meaning Beyond Materialism

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Meaning

In a world often shrouded by materialism, we seek to recover a sense of meaning that transcends our immediate experiences. As Henry Vaughan poignantly expresses in They are all Gone into the World of Light, we grapple with the ephemeral nature of existence.

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?

Tell me, if you understand.

Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!

Who stretched a measuring line across it?

On what were its footings set,

or who laid its cornerstone

while the morning stars sang together

and all the angels shouted for joy?”

— Job 38:4–7

The scientific understanding of time can often feel unsettling. While truth does not need to be comforting, the notion of entropy leading everything toward a meaningless end can challenge our concepts of significance. Lawrence Krauss famously stated, “We now know that we are more insignificant than we ever imagined.” This perspective suggests that we exist as mere “pollution” in a vast, indifferent universe.

But what does it truly mean to declare that we are insignificant? Is significance not inherently tied to meaning? The question arises: who constitutes this “we”? The implication that we can simply dismiss everything we perceive as irrelevant undermines the very act of experiencing meaning. Such assertions often reflect personal sentiments projected onto the universe rather than any scientific understanding.

The conscious act of “knowing” cannot be reduced to material constructs alone. No physicist has adequately explained how matter can achieve self-awareness or coherent subjective experiences. To assume that material analysis negates conscious meaning is a profound oversight. The dismissal of meaning leads to a limited worldview, one that fails to recognize the richness of our experiences.

Brian Cox, a physicist, offers a slightly more nuanced view, suggesting that “meaning is local.” He implies that while meaning exists, it is merely a transient biological phenomenon, stripped of enduring significance. This leads us to reflect on how the Western world transitioned from a culturally rich tapestry of meaning to a more indifferent stance toward existence.

Chapter 2: The Material Universe and Its Implications

The statements made by some modern scientists often conflate their personal feelings with the apparent meaninglessness of the cosmos. For instance, Krauss tweeted, “Faith, like hope, is a human construct that simply helps us pretend that an indifferent universe actually cares what we like.” Such remarks overlook the anthropomorphism inherent in declaring the universe “indifferent.”

If we create a purely material world devoid of consciousness, it is unsurprising that we struggle to recognize our subjectivity when forming opinions. We cannot revert to dogmatic beliefs, yet simplistic scientific assertions do not offer a comprehensive understanding of our existence.

How does all of this intertwine with our concept of time? As long as consciousness persists, meaning exists. Brian Cox's assertion that “meaning is local” highlights the temporal aspect of existence. If meaning is contingent on consciousness, the inevitable passage of time raises existential questions about the permanence of significance.

In the video titled "Homemade: Poetic Remedies for the Times vol. 4", the speaker reflects on the intersection of poetry and human experience, emphasizing how poetry can act as a remedy to our existential dilemmas.

Chapter 3: Music, Poetry, and the Nature of Experience

The discussion of time also relates closely to music. When we listen to music, we perceive both individual notes and the overall composition. This simultaneous awareness of parts and wholes transcends mere material analysis.

Just as music evokes consciousness, poetry similarly enhances our understanding of meaning. The process of reading poetry, much like listening to music, engages us in a cycle of interpretation that deepens our appreciation with each encounter.

In the video "How Themes Emerge: From Scribbled Notes to Poems to Manuscript", the speaker explores the creative process, illustrating how themes evolve and gain significance through artistic expression.

In poetry, each reading offers new insights, creating an emergent sense of meaning. The essence of poetry transcends its components, as it embodies a meaningful whole that cannot be reduced to mere words.

While we may view poetry as a constructed artifact, it serves as a vessel for deeper truths, reflecting the light of our experiences.

Chapter 4: Near-Death Experiences and Transcendence

Consider the phenomenon of near-death experiences (NDEs), where individuals report feelings of transcendence and unity with a greater light. These accounts often parallel intense psychedelic experiences, revealing a timeless quality that defies conventional understanding.

Neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor shared her NDE during a TED Talk, describing how she felt liberated from her physical form, experiencing a profound sense of peace and enlightenment. Such transformative experiences challenge our materialist assumptions about reality.

These insights lead us to propose that the world of meaning is as real as the material world. We can encounter experiences that transcend our usual categories, allowing us to glimpse the possibility of liberation from time.

This duality—experiencing transcendence within time and the potential for deliverance from it—connects us to realms of poetry, religion, and mysticism.

To continue exploring this profound relationship, you can read part three [here](#). Thank you for engaging with my thoughts, and for supporting my journey as a writer in the realm of poetry.

Blessings,

Matthew
