Chapter 1: The Importance of a Quick Reset
In today’s fast-paced world, taking just 30 minutes to refresh your mind can be more beneficial than losing an entire day due to a lack of focus.

I consider myself a productivity enthusiast. My day begins at 6:00 AM, and by 3:00 PM, I’ve completed a range of tasks, from workouts to work commitments and study sessions. Yet, there are times when I find myself at 4 PM without having accomplished a single task on my to-do list. Despite my efforts to eliminate distractions and focus on the screen, I struggle to make progress.
During such times, I realized the necessity of a complete mental reset. This practice helps me pinpoint the reasons behind my reduced productivity and devise strategies to overcome these hurdles.
Section 1.1: Steps for an Effective Reset
Here's how you can achieve this reset in just half an hour:
Disconnect from All Devices
I typically use a MacBook and don't shut it down after working hours. This leads to multiple tabs and documents remaining open, which can clutter my mind. Therefore, when I feel mentally blocked, I turn off all my devices—my laptop, phone, and tablet—and take a short walk around my home. Previously, when I worked in an office, I would step outside for a quick break to get some water.
By changing my environment, I encourage my brain to think differently. According to Marissa Vicario, a certified fitness and wellness coach from New York, a simple walk can help clear your mind:
"When you sit still, your body systems are at rest. Moving your body helps wake up your mitochondria, the part of your cells that produce energy. The combination of fresh air and exercise also stimulates blood flow to the brain so you can regain precision and accuracy. If you’re stuck on a problem or are having difficulty thinking creatively, getting up and walking around can give you a completely different perspective."
Assess and Reorganize Your Tasks
Upon returning from my walk, I don’t dive straight back into my devices. Tackling the same issues without understanding their root cause can perpetuate the problem. I prefer jotting down my feelings in a journal. If you’re more comfortable with digital notes, just ensure your phone is in airplane mode.
Reflecting on your daily actions and emotions can reveal time and energy drains, helping you identify what contributed to your current mindset. For instance, I enjoy waking up early to write, but I often find myself blocked after a night out with friends. To combat this, I’ve integrated yoga into my evening routine, which has improved my mornings after social events.
Identify and Focus on Key Priorities
In "The One Thing" by Gary Keller, I learned that there's usually one essential task that can significantly impact your day. By prioritizing this task, many of the other items on your list become less important.
For example, my typical day might include writing, programming tasks, gym sessions, and studying French. However, on days when I need to submit important code, my focus shifts to that task. Conversely, if I'm feeling uninspired, I might just hit the gym or read. Recognizing what you need to accomplish on a given day allows you to streamline your efforts and still achieve a sense of completion.
