Becoming My Own Biggest Fan: Embracing Self-Love and Authenticity

Chapter 1: The Journey to Self-Acceptance

It's not necessary to have a vast following to truly support yourself; it's all about your mindset and outlook.

Reflecting on my desires, I remember how it all began. Growing up, I faced relentless bullying throughout my school years—targeted for everything from my appearance to my intellect. The taunts were varied: my hair, my voice, my clothes, and even my friendship circle became reasons for ridicule. After being labeled as overly talkative, I gradually learned to keep quiet and engaged in solitary activities that filled my time.

By middle school, I became adept at entertaining myself, but this led to concern from others about my detachment from reality. When I entered high school, I made a conscious effort to be kind to everyone, aiming to show them they weren't alone, as I often felt. Ironically, this kindness didn't shield me from being invisible, a state I discovered was shared by many.

As I transitioned from being unnoticed to suddenly visible, I grappled with the idea that being an outcast had become a trend. While I was seen as a friend, I often felt unworthy of true friendship. The boys I fancied saw me more as a sister than a romantic interest; I was perceived as cute rather than attractive.

In college, everything shifted. The social hierarchies of high school dissolved. Suddenly, I was invited to gatherings and outings, but I prioritized my studies over socializing. I connected with a few genuine people who later became my close friends. I attended classes, hit the gym, and dived into activities like LARPing, all while using my Heelys to navigate campus. My focus was on my goals rather than on fitting in.

After college, I faced a series of challenging relationships, trying to balance motherhood while working, and losing what I thought were solid friendships. I began to retreat into my own world, eventually marrying a longtime friend who loved me for who I am—despite my insecurities.

We started a family, which brought immense joy. My focus shifted back to kindness, but I became increasingly centered on my family, creating a sense of unity among us. However, I started to neglect myself.

Recently, two strong women in my family posed a significant question: "What about Vanessa?" Their inquiry left me speechless. I realized I had little time to focus on myself.

Mornings start early with my toddler, who demands playtime at dawn. After managing his needs, I dive into my daily responsibilities. The hours fly by until my husband returns home after a long day. In between, I make sure the kids are fed, engaged, and happy, while balancing household chores.

As I wrapped up my evening routine, I stumbled upon an ad that struck a chord with me. It asked, “Who do you think you are to be your own biggest fan?” The confident woman in the ad inspired me, and I thought, "I want to be my own biggest fan."

It's time to break free from years of conformity and embrace my individuality. I want to express my thoughts boldly and wear what I love, regardless of how it might be perceived. Bright colors, unique jewelry, and unapologetic confidence are now on my agenda.

“Vanessa, why would you do that?” you might wonder. Because I have two children who will look to me as a role model. I want them to learn that they shouldn't hide or conform to societal expectations. They should be themselves, knowing that those who truly matter will appreciate them for who they are.

It's time for me to let my true self shine! (Send me your best wishes!)
